ring...ring...ring!!!

What's the optimal time for ringing someone else's telephone? I am thinking 45 seconds is a good time. This gives the other guy enough time to answer the phone if he wants to or leave it the hell alone if they don't want to answer it. Of course this doesn't matter if you have an answering machine or voice mail.

OK, I'm dating myself here, but before answering machines and voicemail existed, it was considered polite to let the phone ring 10 times. Most people had one phone in one central place and they had a pretty loud bell. If they were far away from the phone, this gave them plenty of time to get to the thing.

If you were calling Grandma and she was a little slower on her feet, you might have given her 15 or 20 rings to get to the thing.

Now? Who doesn't have voicemail?
